Having mice (willingly) can be a fun (and sometimes bizarre) experience. Remembering a certain mouse named Vanilla was no exception.

Vanilla shared a large glass habitat with a smaller mouse. She and Coco got along so well. The albino mouse was the most daring and the brown one was the most mellow. Despite the rodent's being south and north pole opposites, they got along fantastically. Since their home was large, and people told me that female mice love living in small groups, I decided on bringing in a third.

So when Licorice, a young black mouse came into the picture, Coco nose sniffed noses and welcomed the young one home.

As for Vanilla... well... she wasn't too thrilled. In fact, she made it very clear that she was utterly and completely against the idea.

After a quick sniff, Vanilla jumped on top of the poor mouse and the two rolled so fast they looked like a black and white Japanese rice ball. When Licorice broke free, Vanilla actually stalked and pounced again like a pocket size puma.

Coco heard the squeaking and came out of their woven nest. When the peaceful mouse saw the commotion, she went between the other mice and stood up on her haunches as to say "What is going on, here?" Vanilla than quickly shoved the surprised Coco back into the nest. "Get back in there, this doesn't concern you!" And she resumed her pursuit on the freaked out newcomer.

After over a minute of this, I plucked the plump bully from her beloved habitat and put her in a ten gallon holding pen.

Vanilla got a time out.

When the white fury was gone, Licorice was able to explore and allowed Coco to show her around. In the meantime, the exiled mouse ran on her wheel that I placed in the holding tank. She was running top speed thinking that if ran fast enough she would be able to whisk back in her home. She was clearly jealous of sharing her territory and best sister to the sudden intruder

After a while, I put Vanilla back in abut she resumed kicking even more tail again. So she kept getting time outs.

After several attempts of this, and seeing her so relentless with not giving the little mouse a chance, I decided to give her one more time out... overnight and WITHOUT a wheel and TREATS.

The next morning, Vanilla was calm (ticked off, but calm). My family and I held our breaths and placed the small thunder back inside her home. Vanilla of course, waltz right over to Licorice who froze and stared at the elder as if she was a hungry corn snake. Vanilla sniffed her nose and than... licked the young ones head.

My family and I exhaled and watched Vanilla go eat and run on a wheel that she was way over do for.

After that, Vanilla began to treat Licorice as a little sister. She would groom her, run in a wheel together and sleep together. Though she often used her size to her advantage and the big white mouse would take the last piece of rice cake from her smaller tank mates by standing on her hind legs. They would try to reach in vain and all the pair could so was watch her hog the cake. So when Vanilla napped, the two got their own treats.

Its funny how Vanilla became so fond of the new mouse, who once feared her, now felt like the safest little rodent on the planet. At nap times, little Licorice would groom her adopted elder sisters, thanking them for their hospitality.

So I guess with all the free little paw massages Vanilla was receiving, she realized that having a third wheel wasn't half bad at all.
Just a short tale of one of the many antics of the wonders of my crazed but loveable mice from the past.
